Summary: Hamilton High School repeated as the state champion in high school Science Olympiad; North Middle School of Great Falls was the top middle school. Individual medals also went to students from around the state.

BOZEMAN — Hamilton High School defended its title and claimed the state champion’s team trophy in the annual Montana Science Olympiad state tournament held at Montana State University on Friday, April 15. North Middle School of Great Falls was the top middle school. In addition to the team trophies, gold, silver and bronze medals were given to students for earning first, second and third place in each of the competitions.
Science Olympiad is among the largest STEM competitions in Montana, with hundreds of students participating in events covering life sciences, chemistry, engineering and other topics. Schools register as a team, with individuals or pairs of students competing in various events. Students can earn medals in events, and the school with the highest number of event points wins the state championship trophy and is eligible to compete in the national tournament. Science Olympiad is hosted by the Science Math Resource Center<www.montana.edu/smrc/> in MSU’s College of Education, Health and Human Development<www.montana.edu/ehhd/>.
The top teams in each division are invited to compete in the National Science Olympiad tournament, which will be hosted virtually by the California Institute of Technology in May.
The winners of the team trophies are listed below by division, place and school:
Division C (high school) overall winners: 1st place: Hamilton High School 2nd place: Capital High School, Helena 3rd place: Corvallis High School
Division B (middle school) overall winners 1st place: North Middle School, Great Falls 2nd place (tie): C.R. Anderson Middle School, Helena, and Corvallis Middle School 3rd place: Lewistown Junior High School
Small schools trophies Division C: Choteau High School Division B: Emerge School, Bozeman
In addition to the team trophies, gold, silver and bronze medals are given to students for earning first, second and third place in each of the competitions. Students from the following communities and schools received individual medals:
Division C (high school) medals: Billings Senior; Bozeman (Gallatin High); Choteau; Chinook; Corvallis; Florence-Carlton; Hamilton; Helena Capital; Helena High; Laurel; Lewistown (Fergus High); Livingston (Park High); and Roundup.
Division B (middle school) medals: Bozeman (Emerge School and Sacajawea Middle); Choteau; Conrad; Corvallis; Great Falls (North Middle); Hamilton; Helena Area Christian Home Educators; Helena (C.R. Anderson and Helena Middle); Lewistown; Libby; Manhattan; Missoula (Target Range); and Noxon.
